Shawn sat back in his chair, watching Erica make her way toward the back of the restaurant toward a red door embossed with a shiny gold phoenix. A smile curled over his lips. He was so glad she'd agreed to dinner. The time they'd spent together was delightful. He felt so comfortable around her, like he'd known her for years instead their brief time together.

"Thank you, sir." The Chinese waiter was back at his side. "I hope you and your girlfriend had a good time."

"Yes, certainly," he replied with a nod.

"Your girlfriend, she reminds me of movie star," the waiter replied in a dreamy voice.

Shawn tossed back his head and laughed. "Yes, she does, sort of. I think she's much prettier than a movie star," he confided in a low voice.

"Oh yes, sir. I agree. You a lucky man!" The waiter gave a quick bow. "Thank you again, sir. Come back and see us." And, with that, he continued on to the next table.

Yes, she's much prettier and smarter than most of the women I've dated. Too bad she's not my girlfriend...yet. Shawn stoked his finger absently over the condensation on a half-empty glass of water still left on the table. How can I convince her that we're good for each other?

He'd been serious when he told her about his plans to relocate, considered it for the past year, but was unsure until he'd met her in New York . She'd rekindled a sense of wonder and delight in him...in more ways than one.

Their time together had been filled with happy and very sensual memories. Shawn would never forget the first time he'd seen her luscious, naked body spread out before him. Just the mere recollection was enough to jumpstart his sex drive. And, after seeing her in the stunning blue gown, it was all he could do not scoop her up into his arms. He wanted to taste her berry-tinted lips and stroke his palms over her wicked, womanly curves.

Shawn shifted in his chair. Desire coursed from his heart straight down to his groin. After spending time with her this evening and being close to her, he enjoyed listening to her mild Southern drawl. Plus, the ripe scent of wild strawberries, which enveloped her, was making him crazy. There was no one quite like Erica.

The realization impacted him like a whap upside his head. He was crazy for her.

"Damn it! Mina was right," Shawn muttered.

"Right about what?"

He glanced up, embarrassed he'd not seen her return to the table. "It's nothing." He reassured her with a quick smile and rose from his seat. "Thanks for joining me for dinner tonight. If you're ready, why don't we head back to my hotel?"

"Sure," she nodded, giving a quick glance at her watch. "Then I need to go home and rest. Crystal's counting on me to help her with the rest of her to-do list before the party tomorrow evening."

"What party?" he asked as they walked out the restaurant toward Erica's car.

"A group of us gals are getting together for a cocktail hour at an uptown bar. Ladies only, I'm afraid." She shrugged.

"Do you think there will be male strippers involved?" Shawn asked, flashing her a wicked grin.

"It's possible," Erica replied. "After all, Mina's the one who's planning the party."

"Uh-huh," Shawn nodded, a knowing smile curling over his lips. "Definitely male strippers." And they both laughed while he took her hand and escorted her to the jeep.

Erica hated driving uptown, but it was where his hotel was located. Their light conversation helped calm her nerves while she navigated a maze of one-way streets and several stops for college-aged partiers to cross the road, heading from one nightclub to another. "You sure picked a busy, happening location," she marveled, turning the jeep into the underground parking deck near the swanky, uptown hotel.

"Reminds me of New York , but I could get used to how this city sprawls out into nice neighborhoods and quiet suburbs." Shawn grinned. "I was serious when I said I want to relocate here."

A familiar warmth tingled through her body. Her hands firmly gripped the steering wheel as she pulled into a parking space near the service elevators. "We're here," she announced and shut off the engine. Echoes of people passing through the parking deck bounced off the asphalt walls. The golden glow of a security light shone inside the jeep, illuminating Shawn's deep, thoughtful expression.

"So, would you like to come up to my room?" His voice was low and husky, making her heart skip a beat.

Erica turned to face him and shook her head in protest. "I don't think it's a good idea, Shawn. I really need to --"

"Maybe I can change your mind." He grinned and unfastened his seatbelt, leaning in close. The scent of citrus, bergamot and musk filled her senses with his scent. Her libido stirred as Shawn narrowed the space between them and delicately curled a finger under her chin. He tilted her face up to meet his gaze. His eyes shone in the amber light. Something magical shimmered between them. Erica's breath hitched, mesmerized by the intense expression on his face.

He moved close...closer, then brushed her lips with a tender kiss.

At first, the kiss was as delicate as a rose petal. God, he felt incredible. A dizzying sensation filled her entire being as their kiss deepened and lengthened. Effortlessly, her internal protest burst like a soapy bubble, with a soft, wet pop!

He continued to explore her lips, slipping a hand between the confining seatbelt and her blouse and cupped her breast in his warm palm. Her body trembled at his touch. She wanted him to touch every inch of her. Hunger spread through her. Primal, utterly feminine and full of need.

Shawn pulled his lips from hers. She gave a low moan of protest. "So what do you say now?" He carefully studied her face. "Do you want to come up to my room?"

This time she said yes.

Tia cursed under her breath, pulling another icy box from the cooler shelf. The air was so frosty that she could actually see her breath in the dimly lit cooler. It was one of her least favorite duties, but she’d rather save Linda from chilling her old bones. She was lost in concentration when the door swung open, sending a warm wave of air into the frozen walk-in. “Hey, shut the door, please,” she called over her shoulder while tugging at another hefty box.

“Sure thing.” Dean’s familiar voice sent a jolt of alertness down her spine. “Here. Let me give you a hand with that.” Tia stepped back, giving him room to maneuver in the cramped space. Dean effortlessly pulled two more boxes from the shelf and placed them on the metallic, wheeled cart.

“Anything else?” He asked while rubbing his palms over his denim clad thighs. Even though the gesture was innocent enough, Tia’s heart skipped a beat.

Damn, if the boy only knew just how sexy he is!

She shook her head, then turned to lay a hand on the door. “Just roll these boxes out to Linda while I—”

“Tia?” His voice was soft and smooth as velvet over the loud humming of the refrigerator unit. She turned to face him and marveled at how the cooler’s light swept over the handsome angles of his face, accenting his strong, masculine features.

“Sí?” He stepped around the cart, closing the short distance between them. Tia raised her chin, smiling up into his eyes.

“I just wanted to say I’m sorry, that’s all.”

“Sorry?” She narrowed her eyebrows, perplexed. “Sorry for what, Dean?”

“When I got to the ranch, it was nuts. Before I could get the dust off my boots, they threw me into training for the job. I didn’t have time to call and let you know…”

“Shhh…” She placed her fingers over his lips to silence him. “It’s okay, cowboy. Really, it is.” Besides, I’m the one who pounced on you. I’m the one who screwed up our friendship. The dark thoughts bubbled up inside her, but she couldn’t bring herself to say anything. Not just yet. Perhaps later.

Dean removed her hand from his lips. The warmth of his fingers made her numb fingers tingle in the frosty quarters. With a gentle smile, he pressed a kiss on her open palm. A flicker of heat ignited deep inside her. Tia gave a soft gasp, but didn’t pull away.

“Dean, I don’t think…”

“Good.” He nodded, a slow grin spreading over his face. “Don’t think.” And, with that, his other arm wrapped around her waist, drawing her close. His lips pressed against hers. And for a split second, the world around her went blessedly silent.

The only thing she was aware of was the sweet sensation of his kiss. It felt right. Oh, so right and Tia found herself kissing him back. But her gusto soon gave way to a twinge of guilt and, laying a hand to his chest, Tia pulled back.

“Dean, we shouldn’t be doing this.” Even as soon as the words left her kissed-numb lips, she saw the hurt in his eyes. But, he straightened back to full height, shaking his head.

“I don’t understand, Tia.” He frowned. “I thought everything was cool between us.”

She assured him it was, then added, “It’s not you, it’s me, cowboy. Perhaps I should’ve just kept—”

Thump! Thump! Thump!

“Yeah?” Dean shouted over the refrigerator’s loud hum.

Linda’s muffle voice replied from behind the thick doorway. “You two better hurry. I’ve already got the open sign on and I need those beers—pronto!”

Tia groaned, wishing for just a few minutes more with Dean. As if reading her mind, he curled a finger under her chin, tenderly lifting her gaze to meet his. “After work, we’ll talk this out. Okay?”

“Sure,” she readily agreed, then turned to swing open the large walk-in cooler’s door and pushed out the metal cart. The outside air quickly began to thaw the areas of her body which Dean hadn’t managed to warm up with his kiss. But Tia’s emotions were still in a swirl of astonishment and confusion.

Linda stood behind the bar with her hands on her hips and a half-smile on her face. “Hey, sorry to bother you two, but we’d better get those beers in the ‘fridge. It looks like it’s going to be a busy night.” The older woman tilted her head, gesturing to the bar and grill’s little stage. The Rusty Cats, a local four-piece band, were setting up their instruments.

“¡Dios mío!” Tia muttered under her breath. The Rusty Cats had a decent fan following in town and whenever they played, The Green Lizard would draw in a crowd at least double its usual size. Yes, it was going to be a busy night, for sure. And, in a way, she was relieved.

Maybe it would help to keep her mind off Dean’s bone melting kiss.

Mitchell hadn’t said a word about my tardiness for dinner, but I saw disappointment reflected in his eyes when I entered the dining room. His manservant, Nicholas, pulled back my chair. I sank down into the seat, humbly uttering a sincere apology. Mitchell only nodded, but didn’t say anything. I saw an obviously disapproving look on his finely chiseled features throughout our dinner. My stomach coiled in anticipation of what the look signified. I forced myself to eat, finishing the soup, main course and half of my dessert in the chilled silence of his gaze.

As Nicholas cleared the table, Mitchell sipped his after-dinner wine and fixed his sky blue eyes firmly upon me. A bit anxious, I studied his handsome face. Mitchell Wilcox was a man just past forty, physically fit and in his prime. His gingerbread-colored hair was shorn short, highlighting his finely chiseled features and cleft chin. Mitchell’s thick moustache accented the sensual curve of his lips, giving them a charismatic charm that made my body respond to his every move, his every gaze and his every command.

The tension in the air massed heavy and thick between us where we sat at opposite ends of the large, finely-crafted wooden table. Nicholas bowed low and then withdrew, quiet as a church mouse, closing the doors to the dining room with a soft click.

A smug smile tugged at Mitchell’s lips under his thick moustache. I blushed, my body taut with apprehension, and folded my hands into my lap.

“So, my protégé, what are my rules about mealtimes?” he asked softly, smoothly arching an eyebrow.

“Breakfast is at seven. Lunch is at noon and dinner is at seven o’clock sharp, unless you decide otherwise, Mitchell, sir.”

“Good. I thought I hadn’t made myself clear enough, my dear. You’ve been my protégé for only a few months, and you’re doing well.” He flashed a faint smile that disappeared quickly and added somberly, “but you still have a lot to learn.”

My skin prickled hotly beneath the silken folds of my dress as Mitchell rose, walking over to my side. Fervent heat radiated from his body. He leaned closer. His breath was warm upon the contours of my ear.

“From now on, I want you to be on time for meals in my house. Do I make myself clear, Dixie?” His low, lusty whisper washed heat from my ear to the delicate feminine folds between my legs.

I nodded, then lowered my chin as a rosy warmth flushed over my face.

“Now, get up and roll your skirt above your waist,” he commanded, in a rich voice that sent a chill of apprehension down my spine. Mitchell placed his hands on the top of the chair, smoothly drawing it away. I rose, trembling, to my feet.

I drew a ragged breath, my heart hammering in my chest. Gracefully, I reached down and gathered the hem of my dress, rolling the material up my legs until I revealed the thin, delicate undergarments.

“Good girl. Now, bend down over the table with your hands above your head and legs apart, please.” The politeness of his tone stoked the flickers of my inner fire, adding a unique edginess to doing Mitchell’s bidding.

I bent over, stretching across the fine wooden table as Mitchell had instructed. A soft whimper of protest escaped from my lips. The cool, hard table offered little comfort, except for the faint scent of lemon, which played with my senses. I waited silently, filled with a wicked mixture of awkwardness and arousal. Then I gasped, instinctively squirming, when Mitchell’s hand caressed the cheeks of my bottom through the sheer panties.

“Lie still.” His voice was laced with firm authority.

A tiny flicker of fear shot through me, but I knew he wouldn’t truly hurt me. Mitchell was a gentleman who would honor our agreement and be both safe and fair. I exhaled a deep breath and let the unsettling emotion drift far away.

His fingers hooked the elastic waistband of my panties, sliding the silky material down until it pooled on the floor at my ankles. I flushed at the intensity of the heated feelings raging within me. Distress and disgrace filled every part of my being when I realized just how vulnerable and exposed I was to my benefactor’s strong, dominating presence.

“Are you ready, Dixie?”

Overwhelmed with emotion, I couldn’t speak. My reply seemed knotted in my throat. Instead, I nodded.

My stomach tightened as I braced for the first swat. The warm pressure of a firm hand on the small of my back held me securely upon the tabletop. The air swished, his palm meeting its mark upon the soft cushion of my delicate bottom with a sharp smack.

“Ow!” A stunned utterance slipped from my lips before I could control myself.

“Be quiet,” Mitchell warned firmly, but gently. “This is for your own good, Dixie.”

Perhaps she had returned to her homeland, Russia. But, it was now the twenty-first century. The world had changed. Yet, despite immortality, his unyielding desire for her remained unchanged.

Alexander shifted, gliding a hand down to caress his cock beneath the bed sheets. The veil to the spirit world was thin, but so too was the sheer barrier between love and lust.

A cool autumn breeze caressed him as he stepped out onto the wooden porch. “Megan?” he called out into the darkness surrounding the cabin. “Megan, sweetheart, are you okay?” No reply. Nothing except the sounds of nocturnal creatures in the woods and the watery-sounds of a nearby lake.

Derek glanced over to the gravel driveway. Her Honda was still parked right where she’d left it. His heart pounded wildly as he leapt off the porch. His skin was itching beneath his clothing. The sithech inside wanted out. Derek glanced up at the moon over the tree tops. “Damn you!” he hissed. “This is all your fault, isn’t it?”

The moon glowed back, cold, silent and aloof.

A rustle in the bushes near the car caught Derek’s attention. He stilled, holding his breath. His heart lurched into his throat as he made out a pair of eyes staring at him from the darkened hedge.

The creature leapt out from its hiding place. A large, reddish-hued wolf with green eyes. It was Megan in her sithech form. Derek had never seen another of his kind until now. His heart softened, deep-seated emotions bubbling inside him. Joy and happiness mingled with awe and a dash of fear. “Megan, is that you?” he asked softly, holding his still, uncertain stance. “I was worried about you.”

The wolf let out a low whimper, slowly padding toward him on four paws. Within a few feet of him, she stopped and sniffed the air. Derek knew she sensed his fear. “I’m sorry, honey. I’ve never seen you like uh, this before.” He managed a thin smile. “But you’re beautiful. Really, really beautiful.”

He didn’t know how much of what he said she’d comprehend. In his own experience, he recalled that sometimes he felt human inside, other times not.

“Remember what I said earlier, Derek. Within us, there is a delicate balance between our human side and our sithech.” Derek heard her voice in his head as if she were speaking directly to him. The wolf blinked her big, green eyes, then slowly nodded.
“Of course I can understand you.”

“Oh, good!” Derek exhaled a sigh of relief. “For a moment there, I thought I was the lunatic.”

Megan trotted over to the porch and laid a paw on a pile of clothing…her clothing, folded neatly on a wooden plank. She glanced back at him, a glimmer of moonlight in her eyes. “Wait here a moment,” she conveyed, then disappeared around the side of the house. Within a few minutes, a bare arm appeared around the edge of the cabin.

“My clothes, please?” she asked with a wave of her hand. “Sorry I took off like that, but I was feeling a bit edgy. I desperately needed a run in the woods.”

Derek grinned, scooping up the pile and handed them to her. “It’s okay. I understand. I just can’t get over seeing you like that, Meg. You’re a beautiful creature.”

“Gee, thanks!” Megan, now in her human form, rounded the corner, returning his grin. “Maybe I should pose for the cover of National Geographic, huh?” She winked.

He reached out, encircling his arm around her waist and drew her to him. “You’re a beautiful sithech and woman, too.”

In the glow of the moonlight, he saw her cheeks darken with color. She looked so lovely, so tempting—even if she had twigs stuck in her hair.

“Derek, you shouldn’t say such things.” There was a quiver in her voice as she attempted to pull from his grasp.

“Now, hold on, Meg,” he coaxed. “What’s wrong with me finding you attractive?”

“It’s just the moon having its effect on you. You’re not thinking clearly,” she protested.

“Well, I must confess, Ms. McShaw, I found you attractive even before the moon was near full. Does that make you feel any better?” Derek chuckled and leaned closer, catching a whiff of her dark musky scent.

Megan gazed up at him, speechless. He brought a hand up and tenderly brushed away a smug of dirt on her warm cheek with the pad of his thumb. A shiver went through his body like a ghost passing through a wall.

She drew a ragged breath. “Derek, now is not—”

Before she could finish her protest, he kissed her. Her lips were like warm honey, sweet and yielding against his hungry mouth. A low moan escaped from deep in her throat, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, she leaned in closer, her arms wrapping around his shoulders, drawing their bodies together.

Every muscle in his body tightened, burning with an inner fire. His cock, buried in the crotch of the borrowed sweatpants, also responded, humming to life.

Involuntarily, his hips pushed forward, rubbing against her, seeking out her heat between the layers of clothing. His tongue darted over the warm seam of her lips, parting them gently and capturing her in a fuller, deeper kiss.

The sounds of the forest around them melted away. All of his senses were focused on Megan—sweet, delicious Megan. Sliding a hand beneath the hem of her shirt, he glided a hand over her hot, sweaty skin. Gliding upward, his hands grazed the cups of her bra, feeling the firm imprints of her nipples against the satiny material.

Oh, sweet Jesus! He loved the way she was responding to his touch, confirming that she wanted him as much as he wanted her. His heart thundered in his chest, his hips pressing against her body.

He peeled his lips from hers, planting soft kisses down her neck. The warm, musky scent was spurring him on, making him desperate, hungry and—

“No!” Megan’s voice broke the spell. “No, Derek, we can’t!” She pulled away from his grasp.

Dazed with desire, he blinked, confused. But he held his stance under the heavy gravity of her stare.

“Megan, don’t do this,” he softly pled. “I want you. Honestly, I do.”

“Now’s not the right time,” she protested. “Let’s wait until after the Samhain moon passes, then we’ll see if whatever we’re feeling is the real deal.”

“B-but, Meg, I’m real horny!” he stammered in frustration.

“I can tell.” She flashed him a smirk, her gaze dropping to the tented crotch of his sweatpants.

Derek felt his face warm with embarrassment as she turned, heading back to the cabin.

“I suggest you take another shower…a cold one,” she called over her shoulder. “I need to head to bed. I’m going into town tomorrow to meet with the pack. While I’m there, I’ll gather a few more supplies…including some more suitable clothes for you.”

Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing, now that our bright and shining star can slip away from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind.

Without notice, our dear love can escape our doting embrace. Sing our songs among the stars and walk our dances across the face of the moon.

In the instant that Michael is gone, we know nothing. No clocks can tell time. No oceans can rush our tides with the abrupt absence of our treasure.

Though we are many, each of us is achingly alone, piercingly alone.

We are missing Michael.

TGIFriday - Last week for CORALINE 3D!

According to his Twitter, Neil Gaiman (@neilhimself) says this will be the last week to see CORALINE at the theaters in 3D --so head over soon!

I saw it twice last weekend. It was my first 3D movie and it was fantastic! RealD, the technology used for CORALINE, added dimension and depth to the stunning visuals of the awesome stop-motion animation! Not only were the colors vibrant, but the special 3D made me feel as if I were standing beside the blue-haired heroine and experiencing her adventures too!

So, this weekend, head to your local theaters which offer this movie in RealD! IMHO, it's a real treat --and one you won't want to miss! ;)

UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS

This is a prequel to the popular urban fantasy, UNDERWORLD and its second film, UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION. Rhona Mitra, who bares an uncanny resemblance to the other two films’ leading lady, Kate Beckinsale, portrays Sonja. Sonja is the ill-fated vampire lover of Lucian, played by Michael Sheen, who is the head of the Lycan werewolves. However, she is also the strong-willed daughter of Viktor, portrayed by Bill Nighy, the evil vampire leader.

Even though their ‘Romeo and Juliet’ styled story was told in flashback in the first UNDERWORLD film, Lucian and Sonja fight against the odds for love and freedom…but only one will prevail. However, the audience is rewarded with a brief, bittersweet moment of triumph at the climatic end.

Since I enjoyed both of the previous movies, this prequel satisfied me and, IMHO, brought together the entire UNDERWORLD trilogy. It’s worthy Saturday afternoon entertainment and, yes, I’d happily add this movie to my fantasy-action movie/DVD collection when it’s available.

That’s my $1.01 –for what it’s worth!

How I Met Neil Gaiman...

Neil Gaiman, of The Sandman graphic novels-fame & many other urban fables, is one of my favorite authors --and a very gracious guy!

I met him briefly at Dragon*Con in 2001 during his special one-day visit. I'd waited at the door to the event and asked him for an autograph as he entered the venue. He had been a wee-bit late and was following behind a security guy. Neil Gaiman glanced over at me and asked, "Can you keep up?" in that lovely British accent of his. I did and briskly walked along beside him while he autographed a few things for me on the way the podium. It's a treasure memory for me --and, yes, I still have the autographed items.

Neil Gaiman is also a talented storyteller. During the holidays, I was fortunate to discover online video clips of Neil Gaiman reading, for a live audience, his latest tale, THE GRAVEYARD BOOK!

I suggest you make time for a good story and GO HERE to enjoy --I know I did! ;)

BLESSED WINTER SOLSTICE!

Even though the sun was not up in the sky, visitors to the UK landmark, Stonehenge, still caught a lovely glimpse of shades of blue and orange during 2008's observance of Winter Solstice.

According to the UK's Guardian, "Hundreds of druids, pagans and tourists braved the gloomy weather to gather at Stonehenge on Sunday morning to celebrate the winter solstice. The mystical stones attracted a crowd of 1,900 people, with some dressed in cloaks and robes, to see sunrise at the prehistoric site in Wiltshire."

Marilyn Pix Sold for $150 K

These breathtaking photos were taken by Bert Stein of Marilyn Monroe in spring 1962 for Vogue magazine. Unfortunately, Marilyn's untimely death caused the pictures to run as a memorial instead.

The collection, also known as "The Last Sitting" has been auctioned at Christie's in New York for nearly $150,000 to anonymous buyers.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Joss Whedon, Hollywood writer/director and creator of the FIREFLY approved this workshop.

Though Joss Whedon’s television show FIREFLY only aired through the fall months of 2002, it has continued to generate followers through word of mouth, DVD sales and an exhaustible amount of followers known as “Browncoats”. The Romance Writers of America has many “Browncoasts” in their midst as Jacqui Jacoby learned though discussions with members at the RWA National Conference in both Atlanta and Dallas. Many of these followers love to listen and talk about what they learned from watching the series. Discussing dialogue is a favorite pastime, both at the conferences and online in writing loops.

FIREFLY, created by the Rod Serling of our generation, was a masterpiece of writing. Each of its thirteen episodes taught character development, dialogue and plotting techniques. Its motion picture sequel, SERENITY, not only touched on these subjects but added relationships, loyalties and loss to it’s repertoire.

In this workshop, Ms. Jacoby will reveal the lessons of FIREFLY. By using class participation and examples from the episodes, she will translate with words what Mr. Whedon was teaching us on screen.

Joss Whedon has reviewed this workshop and has given his permission for it to be offered to The Romance Writers of America.

INSTRUCTOR'S BIO:

As a die-hard Firefly fan who can quote dialogue and scene from both the series and the movie, Jacqui Jacoby knows how to get a crowd excited about the Lessons of Firefly.

She is a workshop teacher who has appeared both live and online to give such classes as “From Austin to Aliens: How to Create Classic Tough Chicks” and “Behind the Scenes: The Research Before the Book.” She has the experience to get in front of a group of writers and teach them the lessons of the Firefly Phenomena.

Winner of the Daphne du Maurier Award in Excellence, as well as the Suzannah and the Dixie for her books, Ms. Jacoby’s articles have appeared worldwide. Lessons From The Giants ran in publications in the United States, Canada and Australia. Her latest article, Tough Chicks: Heroines in Today’s Market ran in the June 2006 RWR Magazine.

To prepare for this workshop, Ms. Jacoby sought out and found Mr. Joss Whedon himself. It is with his blessing this class is being offered exclusively to The Romance Writers of America. Documentation is available if necessary.

A graduate of UCLA, Ms. Jacoby lives in the Arizona mountains with my husband of twenty-four years and their three children. Besides studying martial arts and sword fighting, Ms, Jacoby has recently returned to school to achieve her second Bachelor of Arts, this one in Modern Languages.

TRANSPORTER 3 - My $1.01, For What It's Worth

On Thanksgiving, I went to the matinee showing of TRANSPORTER 3. Jason Statham is buff, tough and ready for action, but the thrills come off a bit cheesy and the plot is thin. (Guess I've been spoiled by the top-notch action and story in QUANTUM OF SOLACE.)

Statham plays Frank Martin, reprising his role as our favorite "transporter", and puts the driving gloves on to deliver Valentina, the kidnapped daughter of a Ukranian government official. En route throughout Europe, he is chased by thugs who want to intercept Valentina's safe delivery and not let his personal feelings get in the way of his dangerous objective.

Valentina, played by Natalya Rudakova, is nothing more than eye-candy. She may look cool, but there is very little character development and depth in Valentina. This made me wonder WHY Frank Martin would even fall for this woman! I hoped she would redeem herself by the big climax of the movie. However, much to my disappointment, Valentina was TSTL --yes, folks, "too stupid to live".

TRANSPORTER 3 is good, yet, IMHO, it's only worth the price of one matinee ticket. Will I purchase it on DVD for my collection? I'm not sure yet.

Well, that's my $1.01, for what it's worth -- ;)

TWILIGHT - A Teen Paranormal Movie (My $1.01)...

TWILIGHT is teen angst a la vampire. I haven't read bestselling books, but something seems to have been lost in translation. I guess the book was better. IMHO, the best part of TWILIGHT was Super Massive Black Hole by Muse --a very cool song!

Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie --but one I won't want to watch again or get on DVD for my collection.

In the Teen Paranormal Movie genre, I'd rather recommend these movies:

THE LOST BOYS, BLOOD & CHOCOLATE, THE COVENANT & THE CRAFT.

Daniel Craig and company have done it again! QUANTUM OF SOLACE was action-packed, thrilling and chilling --another worthy movie in the James Bond films, IMHO.

Heck, I liked it so much, I went to see it twice! ;)

PS: Let me add another one of my $1.01 --some people complained about Craig's portrayal of Bond as very violent --uh, helloooo, he's a "00" which is an agent who is license to KILL.

Overall, I was totally wowed with the movie --exotic locations, an air of danger, heart pounding action, subtle humor, Daniel Craig's ruggedly handsome self and an excellent plot line. Sure, the smaller plots were settled, but the larger ones are a mystery waiting for our favorite secret agent to unravel ...next time! :)

HOLLYWOOD'S UNDEAD: They're Just Like Us

The dead used to be a world away, far beyond the realm of mortal existence. If they walked the Earth at all, they inhabited the night.

But the coffins and long black capes are gone. The destructive haunting is over. And forget about menacing the living — these days, the dead are just like us.

Hollywood's dead, circa 2008, wear jeans, type obsessively on their BlackBerries and fret over relationship woes. They solve crimes, they give advice. Edward, the Volvo-driving vampire at the heart of the best-selling novel and soon-to-be-released film "Twilight," even slogs through the tedium of high school biology class.

That's something Anne Rice's regal, imperious Vampire Lestat wouldn't be caught, well, dead doing.

Dead-but-still-talking characters are all over popular culture these days. From TV shows like "True Blood," "Pushing Daisies," "Desperate Housewives," "The Ghost Whisperer" and "Reaper" to movies like "Twilight," "Ghost Town," "Over Her Dead Body" and the film version of the novel "The Lovely Bones" (due out next year), the dead are getting a stunning amount of face time.

Yet Buffy the Vampire Slayer wouldn't have much work to do in the current climate. Like Edward and his "Twilight" kin, the vampires of HBO's "True Blood" avoid biting human necks. These guys sip synthetic blood, bought in six-packs at the convenience store.

The brooding vampire at the heart of the series isn't called Armand, Vladimir or even Angel. His name is Bill. And he's all about getting along with his mortal neighbors.

Across the pop culture landscape, we're seeing "an attempt to really start domesticating the notion of death," says Syracuse University television professor Robert Thompson. Science has answered many of our questions, he says, but "Hamlet's `undiscovered country' is just as undiscovered as it was when Hamlet first made that soliloquy."

So we're turning that scary place into a nice, gated suburb we can recognize.

On the Emmy-winning series "Pushing Daisies," the talkative dead seem irritated, rather than horrified, at having been murdered. Most are too wrapped up in their former lives to notice they're in a morgue. Even on generally Earth-bound "Grey's Anatomy," the late Denny Duquette still strolls the halls, looking healthier than he ever did while breathing.

Meanwhile, Mary Alice Young, the dead narrator of "Desperate Housewives," still watches over the luncheons and poker games of Wisteria Lane long after the mystery surrounding her death has been solved.

"I can't imagine doing an episode of DH without Mary Alice, Wisteria Lane's resident ghost," says executive producer Bob Daily, via e-mail. "Like a good friend, she's never judgmental about what her old neighbors are up to. Just a little... nosy, in an undead sort of way."

In times of anxiety, society has always turned to expressions of the occult. The golden age of horror movies coincided with the Great Depression. Our atomic-age fears and Communist worries were visible in the B-movie horror and sci-fi of the 1950s and early 1960s.

But the monsters and undead of those stories were otherworldly and unfamiliar. Dracula, even as recently as Gary Oldman's 1992 portrayal, never owned an iPod or sat in the high-school cafeteria.

So why are we so focused now on making the supernatural seem mundane?

Perhaps, says author Stewart O'Nan, it's because we're facing death on so many different fronts — climate change and natural disasters, multiple wars and terrorism, even our aging population.

We need now, more than ever, to make death seem as manageable as a trip to Home Depot. And on the CW series "Reaper," it is — the protagonist, Sam, sometimes wrangles escaped souls from hell at a DIY superstore.

In all of these stories, the dead get to stick around and have plenty of contact with the living.

"No one wants to leave and be gone forever," says O'Nan, whose 2003 novel "The Night Country" featured a group of dead teens still hanging out.

Charlaine Harris, author of the best-selling novels upon which "True Blood" is based, says it's about more than just fear. There's also been a blending of traditional fiction genres, with readers embracing stories that mix a dash of horror with, say, modern romance.

Joss Whedon's TV version of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is widely credited with starting the crossover trend. "Buffy" attracted non-horror fans in droves, proving that high school drama and the undead can mix just fine.

The supernatural is also being used as a metaphor for touchy, down-to-earth subjects. In the "Twilight" story, says the film's director, Catherine Hardwicke, "It's almost like an interracial relationship between Edward and Bella."

In a reality TV-saturated world, perhaps it's no surprise that this is not just about fear — it's also about us. At a time when we're more focused on ourselves than ever, we seem to want everyone to be just like us — the celebrities, the politicians and now even the dead.

Of course, even in a familiar sort of afterlife, there are glitches. The temporarily undead of "Pushing Daisies" all seem to have been on "pause" — they've experienced nothing since the moment each was murdered.

Once Ned, the crime-solving pie maker, renders them dead again, we can only assume they're trapped forever in that nothingness. In the end, that may be the scariest death of all.

Vampires in Fiction –They’ve Come a Long Way, Baby!

This past summer, you can image my surprise to walk into a bookstore and find a full display with a vampire theme! Summer –no where near Halloween! They were marketing the newest book releases of Laurell K. Hamilton and Sherrilyn Kenyon, surrounded by other related DVDs and books.

Let’s face it, the undead are all around us –and, this proves the media-market is not dead! A bit over saturated, maybe, but they’re still offering more of the dark characters we can’t seem to get enough of –characters like Lestat, Jean-Claude, Acheron and more!

Gone are the days when vampires were foul, bloodsucking creatures of the night. Now, vampires are uber-cool, hang out in nightclubs, dress in the latest fashions (black leather –yum!) and sometimes own the best wheels around too. Oh, and, of course, they can also kick some major @ss, win over the heroine and, in the end, save the world!

Even though these characters have leaped into the 21st century, their stories reflect many facets of the human condition as well as emotions. Vampires also provide us with archetypal characters which allow us to safely explore our own psyches too –for better or worse.

But, enough of this serious stuff! What I really enjoy most of all about fictional vampires is the thrill of a fun, sexy and entertaining story, either on film or in a good book!

Bela Lugosi –Count Dracula

“I never drink…wine.”

Bela Lugosi’s deliverance of this classic line from the 1931 film, Dracula, is enough to send chills over your body, even today –seventy-seven years later. The Hungarian stage and film actor forever captured our imaginations with his portrayal of Count Dracula, both on the Broadway stage (1927) and the Universal film (1931), based upon Bram Stoker’s classic vampire story, DRACULA.

Lugosi was creepy, yet charismatic with his flowing cape, penetrating eyes and thick accent. Yes, sure, there are other portrayals of Count Dracula in films and each actor has added to the movie vampire’s mystique. Christopher Lee, in the 1960’s Hammer Films, showed a more sinister, bloodthirsty side of the (in)famous vampire. However, actor Gary Oldman, in 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, portrayed the Count as a sympathetic even romantic character. But, in my opinion, Lugosi’s performance captures both the seductive and the sinister qualities of one of the most famous fictional characters of all-time…Count Dracula.

If you get a chance, rent or purchase the DVD box-set of the 75th anniversary edition of Dracula. Let go of your 21st century mind, curl up on the sofa, alone (or with a sweetie) in the dark and let the magic begin –you’ll be glad you did!

WERE-ROMANCES?

What is a werewolf? According to Wikipedia, “Werewolves, also known as lycanthropes, are mythological or folkloric humans with the ability to shapeshift into wolves or wolf-like creatures, either purposely, being bitten by another werewolf or after being placed under a curse. This transformation is often associated with the appearance of the full moon…”

“Werewolves are often granted extra-human strength and senses, far beyond those of both wolves or men. The werewolf is generally held as a European character, although its lore spread through the world in later times. Shape-shifters, similar to werewolves, are common in tales from all over the world, most notably amongst the American Indians, though most of them involve animal forms other than wolves.”

In my opinion, from looking at the trends in paranormal romances today, the wolf is the one of the most popular characters in the genre –second only to vampires. The male wolves seem to embody traits of the alpha romance hero: confident and aggressive, dominate, yet protective, loving and loyal to his pack –and his mate. And, if you toss in a touch of magick and extraordinary strength, you have the right ingredients for a hot, sexy male worth writing (or reading) about! *wink-wink*

I love Ray McShaw, the alpha hero in my wolf story, FULL MOON FEVER! His wolf-blood is not a curse, but a hereditary trait of his Scottish descendants. Ray’s also a pack guardian. Ray takes his duty to protect his pack very seriously, but his life becomes more complicated when he meets Jacqueline Hamilton –a human. Not only does he feel the need to protect Jac after her life-threatening encounter with another wolf, but he also feels a ‘full moon’ attraction to her and attempts to keep from falling in love.

National Wolf Awareness Week – October 12-19, 2008

Celebrated on the third week of October, this annual event is to dispel misconceptions about wolves and to teach us about the important role these predators play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Defenders.org says, “The wolf is a striking symbol of wild nature, yet it has long been shrouded by myth and superstition. Earlier this century, wolves were methodically exterminated from nearly all of their historic range.”

6 Things You Should Know about Wolves from Defenders.org:

1. You stand a better chance of getting hit by a meteorite than being killed by a wolf.

Although wolves are large, powerful animals that could kill humans, they do not. According to a 2002 study about wolf conflicts with humans, there is no documented case of a healthy, wild wolf killing a human in the United States. By comparison, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate between 10 to 20 people are killed and 4.7 million attacked each year by man's best friend, the domestic dog.

2. Wolves and large grazing animals lived side-by-side for tens of thousands of years before the first settlers arrived.

Recent studies on Yellowstone elk and wolves have found that weather and hunter harvest affect elk declines more than wolf predation. In fact, wolves often enhance prey populations by culling weak and sick animals from the gene pool, leaving only the strongest animals to reproduce. Food availability and weather regulate wolf populations. When their prey is scarce, wolves suffer too. They breed less frequently, have fewer litters, and may even starve to death.

3. Ranching is a minor part of the economic base of the northern Rockies.

For instance, in the counties around Yellowstone National Park , livestock production accounts for less than 4% of personal income, while tourism-related industries account for more than 50%. Moreover wolves effects on livestock are negligible, so effects on ranching jobs will be virtually nonexistent.

4. In portions of the northern Rockies and Southwest, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) designated wolves as "experimental, nonessential" populations.

This special designation gave landowners a limited right to kill wolves caught in the act of preying on livestock on private property and increased the ability of FWS to remove or destroy problem wolves. Since 1978, wolves, listed as threatened in Minnesota, have been managed under a special regulation that controls individuals that kill livestock and pets.

5. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, very few land use restrictions have proven necessary to facilitate wolf recovery in Montana and Minnesota.

The service reports that land use restrictions are necessary only if illegal mortality of wolves occurs at high levels.

6. Numerous polls taken throughout the United States consistently demonstrate that more people support wolf recovery than oppose it.

In fact, a 2002 quantitative summary of human attitudes towards wolves found that 61% of the general population samples had positive attitudes towards wolves.

Jac silenced him with a kiss, pressing her lips against his with all the fierce passion that simmered inside her. He tasted of cinnamon and primal lust as she slipped her tongue between his lips. In the back of her mind, she wondered where he’d been all her life. Her heart panged at the thought of all the lonely nights she’d been through, but now, with her body wrapped around his, she knew he was worth waiting for.

He pulled his lips from hers, trailing kisses down the column of her throat. Jac let out a low moan as the heat of his mouth stirred emotions buried deep inside her. Her sex was slick with moisture and ached with longing as he gently rocked his body against her. The pleasure of his cock inside her increased the erotic sensations. It racked her body with such passion, it was unbelievable. Then, she was falling, falling into pitch darkness. She let out a shout, crashing down onto the cold ground.

Jac sat up, naked and cold in a dark, wooded glade. Her heart pounding wildly in her chest as she glanced around, terrified. Where was he? Her legs went rubbery. She lost her footing and fell, face first, onto the hard, cold ground. Jac rolled onto her back, just in time to see a black, furry creature leap into the air. Air whooshed from her lungs as the creature landed on top of her, its large, lupus-like face only inches from hers.

Jac was scared out of her wits. A scream ripped from her throat. She flailed her arms, attempting to fight. Get off me!

“Get off me!” Jac shouted, flinging the covers onto the floor. Her heart was racing as she sat up, looking around. Where was she? It took a moment to get her bearings. The room slowly came into focus. She was in bed, in a hotel room…alone.

There was no dark woods, no hideous wolf-creature attacking her. It was all a dream.

“More like a nightmare,” she muttered, retrieving the bedcover and wrapping herself in the warm, comforting material. “Damn,” Jac cursed under her breath, curling up in the bed once again. Listening to her heart return to a normal pace, the nightmare gradually dissipated as she began to focus on the day ahead.

“Time to get busy,” she sighed, tossing the cover aside and rising from the bed. A manila folder lay beside her laptop bag. Jac flipped it open, scanning its contents. Her editor’s contact had provided nothing more than a few transcriptions of town hall council meetings, a genealogical family tree and a clipping from the local newspaper.

She scanned over the scrap of paper. It was a sighting of a half-man, half-wolf spotted in town on Halloween. “A werewolf on Halloween, huh?” Jac shook her head, slipping the news clipping back into the assignment folder. “I still think it’s all a big farce,” she grumbled, but decided to get down to business—but only after a shower and a cup of coffee. These were the two things she needed every morning to jumpstart her brain.

9/11/01: Where Was I?

I had just returned from a fantastic trip to Dragon*Con in Atlanta the week before. I was working as an admin. assistant in an office in Charlotte and was sitting down with my morning coffee at my desk when I heard the News Flash on the radio. The office manager and I were the only ones in the office that day. It was an eerily quiet day as we tried to work, yet continually listening to the radio reports.

After returning home that evening, I watched reruns of the event on TV. Yes, it's true, seeing IS believing, yet I couldn't believe what I saw. I didn't want to watch anymore --I was heartsick and angry, knowing the whole world had changed within a matter of minutes.

That's where I was --and I'll never forget.

I AM A WOMAN --AND I VOTE!

*Note from Sabrina Luna: This was recently forwarded to me in an email. It made me heartsick...and made me think. I am a voter, yet there are still women out there who don't exercise their right to vote. I sincerely hope this will change their minds!

WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE:

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were wives and mothers and unprepared for the fury that would be unleashed on them. Initially they were jailed for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

By the end of the night, they were fighting for their lives.

Forty prison guards wielding clubs and with their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women accused of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'

Lucy Burns

They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

Dora Lewis

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to 'teach a lesson' to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their
food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.

Alice Paul

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

Some women won't vote this year because-why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

Recently I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's movie 'Iron Jawed Angels..' It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my voice heard. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. 'One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,' she said.
'What would those women think of the way I use, or don't use, my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.' The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her 'all over again.'

HBO has released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.

We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party
- remember to vote.

History is being made.
